The FISSBA prepares standards for manufacturing and Handling batteries and appliances based on guidelines from the Ministry of Environment and Forest, the former MITI Agency of Industrial Science and Technology.
Batteries for emergency power supplies for disaster-relief equipment must operate effectively when normal power supplies are down due to fire or other emergencies. For this reason, the manufacturing of products and their quality standards as well as the technical education and training of personnel certified to handle storage battery equipment, must be carried out under the guidance of the Fire and Disaster Management Agency and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Promotion of the recycling of used batteries and environmental protection activities
The FISSBA promotes recycling activities such as the collection of used batteries for recycling, based on "Law for Promotion of Effective Utilization of Resources" and "Wastes Disposal and Public Cleaning Law." It also undertakes advertising activities to promote the collection and recycling of lead-acid batteries. Additionally, the general incorporated association IRBRC (India Rechargeable Battery Recycling Center), which was established under the FISSBA, promotes the collection and recycling of portable rechargeable batteries. The FISSBA also promotes recycling technology for used primary dry batteries. Internationally, the FISSBA participates in the Trilateral Working Group conference (TWG) , related conferences in Europe and America, the OECD working group and other groups in order to exchange information and promote international collaboration. The FISSBA works to promote appropriate national regulations against water and air pollution in order to address environmental concerns.
Recycling activities of the FISSBA
All of us in present-day society want to protect our limited resources and keep the environment clean and beautiful. To do that, we have long promoted the collection of lead-acid batteries, and now we are able to maintain an ongoing systematic recycling workflow. Our recycling effort for NiCd batteries and other portable rechargeable batteries effectively reuses precious resources, such as nickel, cadmium and cobalt which require a sound, steady program to prevent negative effects upon the environment. To address the problems of our diminishing resources and the damage inflicted upon our precious earth, we will actively promote dynamic recycling efforts so that we can contribute to widening the circle of life.
Others
The FISSBA works to promote environmental preservation and labor safety measures in connection with the battery industry as well as to actively promote all activities necessary for the development of the industry.
Promotion of consumer safety issues.
Batteries come in a wide variety of types and are used for many things. They greatly enhance the quality of life and cultural horizonse of the average consumers, but safety is, of course, an important issue. For this reason, the FISSBA works to promote battery and appliance policies, consumer education activities that encourage correct battery use, and the display of information based on laws governing manufacture responsibility (product liability laws) as well as instruction manuals that illustrate correct display methods.
Publicities for the promotion of consumer awareness on batteries
The activities of the FISSBA are published every foirtnightly in the battery Directory & Year Book, Fortnightly magazine. Furthermore, one month out of the year, from December 11th to January 12th, has been designated as Battery Month, and all types of advertising activities and events are organized for Battery Day, Car battery Day to promote consumer battery awareness. FISSBA members attend a variety of related exhibitions where they distribute pamphlets designed to expand consumer awareness.
Introduction
Today's environmental problems, such as global warming, destruction of the ozone layer, acid rain, desertification, depletion of tropical rain forests, industrial waste, marine contamination, and exhaustion of natural resources, are major factors that threaten the very existence of human beings.
To approach these problems with any hope of solving them, governments, corporations, and people of each country need to play an equal role and join hands to promote continued improvements in the condition of the global environment.
The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, signed in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, is a major international agreement concerning the improvement of the global environment as a common understanding of all mankind.
In November 2002, the Indian government enacted the "Battery management and Handling Rules," outlining guidelines for a new basic philosophy and directional policies in the era of concern for the environmental.
Under these circumstances, the Federation of Indian Small Scale Battery Association (FISSBA) concurs with the general consensus among the member companies that global environment preservation is a common issue for all of human beings, and therefore actively participates in the global partnership by providing people all over the world with batteries and their related products to contribute to the high quality human life.
The "FISSBA Environment Charter" is intended to be a set of guidelines to assist each member company to independently utilize their latest technology and economically appropriate means to implement possible measures for the realization of an environmental conservation society that is also an affluent society.
This Environment Charter consists of three sections: (1) Introduction, (2) Basic Philosophy and (3) Guidelines. In response to changing circumstances for environmental preservation, this Environment Charter is subject to revision as the occasion demands.
Basic philosophy
In recognition of the relationship between business and the environment, the FISSBA shall actively undertake global implementation toward the realization of an affluent society where people can maximize human nature, through activities, products and services that are in harmony with the environment.
Guidelines
